Formation in Leadership
Formation is a word long associated with preparation for religious life, a process of orienting one's lifestyle for ministry. Yet, most religious, when “called to lead” at community, ministry, or congregation level often find themselves in leadership roles without the formation to be able to exercise effective leadership.
What would change if we intentionally prepared a generation of men and women religious who are leaders of character and competence who will inspire a shared vision in the institutions they serve, build alignment in their teams, and champion execution to translate the shared vision into reality?
Formation in Leadership for the Religious provides the foundation and leadership principles for service in congregational and ministry leadership roles. It is designed to groom the next generation of the religious for wholesome leadership in any sphere of influence they find themselves.
Formation and Accompaniment of Young Members
This is what motivated us to conceptualize Wholistic Leadership Formation, a comprehensive and integrated series of modular Masterclasses, that forms men and women religious into leaders of competence and character to stay strong and resilient as they thoughtfully tackle the greatest opportunities and challenges in congregations and their ministries.
Wholistic Leadership Formation is designed specifically to help congregations intentionally prepare a generation of courageous and sacrificial leaders who will lead the way in reflecting light into a world where darkness is the default — a generation of leaders who will bring thoughtfulness, conviction, hope, resourcing, strategic thinking, and deeply rooted care to the institutions and people they serve.
This formation in leadership builds on the religious formation by enhancing three dimensions of leadership: spiritual maturity (leading self), relational health (leading others), and effective leadership (leading the organization). The objective is to provide leadership formation which results in a qualitative change in the leader’s life, relationships, and leadership practices. It focuses on the specific needs and issues facing the religious in Africa.

You will be joining a host of congregations that have recognized that effective leader development requires committing to an intentional, long-term developmental journey rather than one-off training events.
One such congregation is the Christian Brothers, Africa Province who have engaged us to provide formation in leadership to all the newly professed brothers. And going forward, leadership formation will be integrated as part of the final stage of preparing the novices for pastoral experience.
